Another View

As we're wrapping up the semester, I've realized that I've been remiss in including information contrary to the novels on the website because I've been so wrapped up in trying to support the bulk of the reading. And so, I found this - the first of a few articles that toot a different horn. Read up and tell us what you think. Do you still agree more with Affluenza? Or is this direction more what you have in mind?

This article is very interesting but all I see happening is that we are always looking for what we need over at other countries. I just feel that we should get everything for ourselves in our own country. Well the government shouldn't allowed over seas exports. Well now that everything that is going on like the war it is getting harder for the exports to come here. But I guess we have gone to far that it would be too hard to try to get everything here. SO thats my opinion.Rosie

i think like mentioned in the article there sometimes is no choice but to do business overseas. sometimes thats only place to get the things we need. i also think that it can pose a huge problem when relations with that country are not exactly wonderful. also trying to regulate what the other countries can and cannot use or do to their products is another tough area. this articles reminds me of something i was watching the other day. it was about microns president steve appleton who made a comment or rather a correction of a ,according to him, misquoted comment. the comment was something to the effect that he was not or did not need to invest in the us anymore. he stated he is investing overseas because of americas lack of advancement. america is not persuing in education or advancement with education. he has quite a few factories overseas and is opening more.

Interesting how the global outlook on America can affect the world that we live in.
Not sure I agree with everything Affluenza has to say but I do know that there are some
good points in the book. But for the most part it’s out on the fringe with the rest of the Green folks and there is nothing wrong with that. That’s the good thing about this county we are free to pursue happiness as we see fit, we just have to remember that we are not guaranteed happiness.

I do enjoy living in a country that gives freedom to everyone, to say what they want, to do what they want, and to have what they want to a give extent of social order. But what I do not appreciate is when they tell me that I should do this or that because if I don’t the ice caps are going to melt and the polar bears will drown. But what can we do, what can we do, life is but a blink of an eye, we must be careful that we focus on the things that are important to us…..M~

I think throughout the entire class my opinions haven’t been changed too much, leaving me still caught in the middle. Supporting mass corporations, they do perform great tasks for the community and help provide many things such as money, food, etc. However, just like anything else, there should be some moderation. On Affluenzas behalf, I don’t think we need as much as we think we do and advertising has gone a little crazy. It’s perfectly fine if corporations want to help improve our society, neighborhoods, but when the advertising of “look what we did for them” or showing off how their product is better than others because they do many great things, that is when it gets out of hand.

I don't necessarily see globalization as a bad thing. As long as corporations keep in mind human rights I think that they can help developing countries economically. Even though the wages offered by American corporations are way below our standards in other countries they are still allowing the workers to put food on the table. Those corporations are creating jobs that wouldn't otherwise exist. So as long as things are done ethically regarding working conditions I approve of global corporations.

I never did quite see everything in Affluenza and the other books as an entirely bad thing, I just think they could do some things a little different. My view is that without these corporations our global market would crumble. So really, globalization is alright, just as long as we don't entirely move all of our corporations out of the U.S.

Good Global citizens stuck out to me. This article is refers to other countries that are doing their part to keep citizens safe. Even taking employees out of Nigeria because of attacks and threats. But yet the U.S. does nothing about protecting citizens, not even labeling things to make sure consumers are aware that it could cause problems later. Things are not thoroughly tested and passed for regulation.
This commits "human rights abuse" i find that to be another key point. corporations want the citizens but they are abusing them and killing them off by not labeling things the way they should be done.
