Go Green!

With so much negative talk about Wal-Mart, I knew I had to post this when I saw it. I don't know that I'm sold yet on the megalopolis, but this surely helps.

i agree that a company as big as walmart or any company for that matter should be looking at ways to conserve energy and be a "better citizen" as it was put. granted walmart is about a cheaper product but i think that walmart makes so much money that it is very easy to not be worried about the cost of it's energy bill or the gas prices of the trucks to ship things. i think the authors point that walmart should be the first conserve because of what it stands for is not really a valid point. i think they make enough to not be as concerned as a smaller company. don't get me wrong i think walmart should conserve because it's the right thing to do and because it is so big and uses so many resorces but the argument that they should have been doing this because they sell cheaper products doesn't make sense to me. i think it will be interesting to see if all th things promised really come about.

Wal-Mart… Where do we start with this one legged 3 eyed handicapped, dyslexic giant. They give good news out the front door and then all the bad sneaks out the back door. But for the most part they are no different than any other major company, corporation. They just seem to have more bull’s-eyes on their back than anyone else out there. But when you are the bad boy on the block you seem to get it from all sides.

They are just out for their bottom line, throw some bones to the folks and they will keep their traps shut. Then study workers find out what they are crying about, then through a 3rd party they help them solve their issues and turn around and say see our workers are happy.

Wal-Mart has products that people can afford with a very limited income. Most of the products are made in Mexico how do you think they make so much dam money. Cheap labor, cheap products. They should be called Cheap-Mart, but they try to do good, more than most. At least they don’t try to tear this country down and ever opportunity.

Hey what can you do…..? Prepare for the worst hope for the best. If you’re smart…

In my opinion, even though the outcome of their efforts will be good if the proposal actually goes through, they are not doing it for the "right" reasons. The way I see it they are just trying to become more energy-efficient in order to increase their overall profits by decreasing the amount of energy they consume. An example is when Scott said, "if we improve our fleet fuel mileage by just one mile per gallon, we can save over $52 million a year." They are not expressing their "good cititen" act in terms of the resources they will be saving but in the dollar amount that they will save. At the end the results will be the same so having them become more energy-efficient is a good thing.

Why would Scott even be telling us about all this? It's like that underwear ad with nekked old ladies. Sure, they want to look like they're the hero for putting average women in their advertisements, but like it was said, it's still advertising. Same thing with Wal-Mart, I don't need to know that you're saving millions by increasing your mileage, because they're not my millions. BUT, the millions we're talking about belong to a few people; the shareholders.

Also, if you're going after the government to increase minimum wage, I can see Scott wanting everyone to know, but what's not said, is that he also has the power to HIRE at a higher wage, once again, trying to look good by doing jack shiot. So, the shareholders and going to get another %52 million once they increase their fuel efficiency, pocket that, and say "screw yourself" when you try to get hired at more than minimum. That is, of course, unless the Federal Government passes a law that puts minimum wage up a few cents.

Because I have a negative bias opinion towards Wal-Mart, I have a hard time thinking that they are doing something to because it’s good for the community. It seems to be all for show or save a buck. Using the example for the article, how they want to improve their employees’ health care, but then they try and hire only those who they think won’t get sick. Or going back to saving a buck, become more energy-efficient, while it is a good thing I think its motives are based on money. But like I said, I’m some what of a Negative Nancy when it comes to them so I probably don’t give them a fair chance.

It really makes cents... pun intended as corny as it was. As it was widely talked about in the last socratic seminar, companies are only in it to make money, so if they reduce energy costs and improve gas mileage, well, they are going to be making a whole bundle more a year, like they said, getting one more mpg will save them $52 million a year, why wouldn't they want to do that? They aren't really doing it entirely for the environment, they are doing it for their pocketbooks.

I had no idea what the "go Green" was until i read this article. Just talking about it in class last week i was confused. But it seems to me that corporate companies are trying to make things better by adding, or changing just a little about themselves. And then comes Wal-Mart and they are still all about how to make the next dollar, or profit. Not caring who is hurt by the whole thing time after time. It really frustrates me.
